NLHE Post-flop Strategy

Fortune Jack Poker

The flop is where the toughest decisions are made. With 5 out of 7 cards out, the strength of your hand is pretty much decided at this point, but victory or defeat is still uncertain. How you play your hand, your opponents and your position is probably more critical to winning than the cards themselves.

These are just general guidelines on how to play the flop. Poker is a highly situational game and factors such as the type of opponents and your position will have strong influence.

Generally, you should only bet and bet aggressively when you think you flopped the winning hand, unless you flopped the nuts in which case you should slowplay to fatten up the pot. If you missed the flop completely, your best option is usually to fold.

If you flopped a drawing hand, consider the pot odds before making a move. Here, you have the option of either employing a semi-bluff or try to get a free card. Usually, if you are in early position, you should try to go for a free card. Generally, semi-bluff is more effective if you are in late position.

"While heading the profit of my counsel, avail yourself also of any helpful circumstances over and beyond the ordinary rules. According as circumstances are favorable, one should modify one's plans." - Sun Tzu

I stress again, these are just general guidelines on how to play the flop. Don't follow them like a robot. You need to vary your play every now and then to deceive your opponents. Know your enemy but not let the enemy know you.
